Barry - Leader and Friend

Created by Robert one year ago
I first met Barry in 1986 when he interviewed me for a Senior Engineer job at Coventry City Engineers. We were there for almost 20 years, delivering some great highway projects for the City, while transitioning from the world of local government into private consultancy. He was at the forefront of these significant cultural changes through Broadgate Consultants, Babtie Group and then Jacobs, helping to show the way to staff and steadying nerves. We also experienced the highs, and lows, of winning and losing contracts.
In the early 2000’s we moved to a brand new office in Haddenham in Buckinghamshire. Beautiful poppy fields replaced the drab views over the City centre. I remember the years here very fondly, there was a special buzz, a friendly atmosphere. We carried on the traditional fancy dress themed nights for our Christmas parties which originated back in Coventry. It didn’t matter what the theme was, Barry always seemed to be able to wear the same dark suit! I eventually moved on in 2010, and I always respected Barry as a good leader, a good mentor, and a good friend. He was hugely supportive and influential on my career and helped me gain confidence to spread my wings when the time was right.
My wife, Gina, and I last met up with Barry and Jane over lunch in Kenilworth back in 2017. We knew then that something wasn’t quite right. It is so sad that he lived out his too brief retirement with this dreadful disease. We know Barry was much loved and respected and that he will be sadly missed. Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go to Jane, who we also knew well, and we send our love. So sorry we can’t attend the funeral. Bob Southey
